let go and trust the process

How do you let go and trust the process?

As actors and creatives, there is so much about our careers that is beyond our control. Most creative fields—artists, musicians, writers, etc.—can hone their craft solo, but we need an audience, a stage, a camera.

It’s easy to get frustrated but getting clear on your big picture vision will help you stay on track.

I’ve put together a few tips to help you determine your unique path, let go of distractions and enjoy the ride.

What Does it Mean to Trust the Process?

Trusting the process means letting go of your timeline, your expectations, and having faith that while you’re putting in your hard work, the Universe is doing its thing to guide you to where you want to be.

I know how hard that may sound, especially if you struggle with perfectionism or anxiety, but when you learn to let go and focus on the journey rather than the results, you’ll feel calmer, more confident and more purposeful in your actions.

Listen To Your Intuition.

When you think of the big picture of your life, and all the wonderful things you’d like to be there, how much of it is what you really want and how much of it is what you think you “should” want?

Our intuition is one of the most powerful indicators of whether we’re in alignment with our deepest desires and values. Many actors try to duplicate the path of another successful person because, obviously, it worked for them, so why not me?

Aside from that fact that it would be impossible to do, everyone’s journey is unique. What is right for one person may not be right for anyone else.

When you ignore your intuition, you give up power in your life to someone else and let them call the shots.

Take some time, if you need it, to journal or visualize your authentic, true-to-only-you big picture vision.

Focus on your impact.

Think back to why you became an actor in the first place. I know it wasn’t for the fame and money, because there are plenty of unglamorous parts of our jobs that become clear once you dive in. I bet it was because you wanted to tell stories that impact people.

And as an actor, you’re able to do that your entire career, not just when you “make it big”. Trust that you are building a fan base with every role you book, no matter how big or small. And focus your energy on the value you’re adding to the world around you through your art.

Let go of what you can’t control.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been rejected. ✋

(Both of my hands are up, for the record.)

No matter how talented you are, as an actor, you’re pretty much BFFs with rejection. In fact, working in any creative field, there are plenty of lost jobs, missed funding opportunities, bad ideas and tossed out pitches to go around too.

A positive mindset can go a long way towards getting you to your ultimate goal, not to mention it’s good for your health. Trust that you are doing good work, and remember that there are a million reasons why you might not book a job that have absolutely nothing to do with you, your talent or your worth.

Plus, rejection isn’t always a bad thing. It can be a chance for you to grow as an artist and improve areas of your craft, confidence or presentation that might need some fine tuning. Here are 5 tips to help you handle creative rejection (like now).

Put your vision into practice.

Do you dream of landing a juicy role as a superhero? Or maybe you want to book a national tour of a Broadway musical? Great! But how are you living that vision right now?

You don’t have to wait for the ink to dry on a contract to start taking care of your physical body and building your endurance for long-term schedules. You can begin to put into practice the healthy habits of A-list actors immediately.

Here are 3 simple changes you can make right now that pay big dividends towards your long term health and help you prepare so you’re not scrambling when work gets super busy.

LOVE + peace!
